Alumni Preceptors & Alumni Mentors

Alumni Preceptors

All new’ fully paid-up members and sponsors of LSSNMAIA may apply to become preceptors subject to experience and all those taking up roles will have preceptors to help them settle into their role. LSSNMAIA members are introduced to their roles and our mission, current projects, activities, policies, procedures and the social milieu of the hospital and to ensure competency with skill sets so that safe, competent care is delivered. Alumni preceptor and the precepting process are the keys for success for managers and co-ordinators.

Alumni preceptor acts role models, educator, introducer, friend and confidant. Alumni Preceptors model new skills, observe and help the new nurse with these skills and evaluate the new nurse accomplishing these skills. Alumni preceptor will explain the policy on project volunteer recruitment, how task is undertaken and documented and volunteer feedback. Alumni preceptor records competencies and any special skills like project management or problem solving skills and evaluate their competency to recruit new volunteers independently. Precepting may take time for a well-defined outcome. The relationship may end after six months or longer.

Alumni Mentors

All new’ fully paid-up members and sponsors of LSSNMAIA may apply to become mentors subject to experience and new graduates are mentees and have can have mentors and if taking Alumni duties. Alumni mentors encourage, support and guide graduate nurses and midwives joining the LSSNMAIA so that they can continue to grow personally and professionally and to become a resource to others. Alumni Mentors use their skills and professional expertise to act as advisors, coaches, counsellors, or friends to new graduates and alumni as possible.

Alumni Mentors are not work mentees nor are they responsible for solving their day-to-day issues. Alumni Mentors must report any mentees’ professional misconduct that may embarrass LSSNMAIA. Alumni Mentors and Mentees embrace a non- judgemental and rewarding relationship that promotes the interest of LSSNMAIA, personal, career growth and problem solving and setting good example. Alumni Mentors promotes LSSNMAIA mission and project goals with mentees, invites them to get involved alumni activities i.e. socialise, network, engage with members online, forums, listens to mentees and responds to issues raised and communicate with executives members to resolve problems.
