Waking up and starting off the day with headaches and
dizziness?
These are conditions caused by a lack of sleep and
dehydration (one of the reasons).
Staying hydrated each day and adequate sleep each
night will prevent these conditions.
For a quick treatment: over-counter medication in the
form of pain reliever can help with headaches and
electrolyte replacement drinks, a power nap (a quick 5
to 15 minutes), and/or some ginger (tea or supplement)
will improve your dizziness.

Phnom Penh has been experiencing an increase in Culex mosquitoes since early January 2025. Culex mosquitoes are known to spread diseases like West Nile Virus and Japanese Encephalitis. To protect yourselves, please take the following precautions:

1. Eliminate standing water.
2. Use mosquito repellent.
3. Ensure windows and doors have screens. If there are no screens, please keep them close.
4.  Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves and pants.
5. Use mosquito nets while sleeping.
6. If all else fails, an electric mosquito zapper will do the trick! They are available in stores, such as Makro.

Every year, Southeast Asian countries engage in post-harvest and other agricultural burning to prepare the soil for the following season. The peak burning period typically occurs from January to March. This practice significantly deteriorates air quality across the region. According to the air quality index, PM2.5 levels are highest during the night and early morning, with air quality improving as the day progresses. To safeguard yourself and your family, consider the following tips:

1. Monitor air quality frequently by downloading to your mobile device. grow.
2. Use air purifiers with HEPA filters in your home, especially throughout the night.
3. Keep windows and doors closed to minimize indoor pollution. 
4. Ventilate your home only when air quality is better.
5. Wear a proper N95 mask when outdoors to filter out PM2.5 particles effectively. Simple face masks are not as effective. Ucare Pharmacy has KF94 masks.

In the coming weeks, we will be conducting a vaccination audit among our kindergarten and grade 1 students. The most common boosters needed for children ages 4-6 are DTaP, Polio, and a third dose of MMR (if the first dose was given before 12 months of age). Below, I have explained the rationale behind these three common vaccines.

Rationales

DTaP:  dose 4 must be given at age 4 or older. If the 4th dose was given younger than age 4, the efficacy gradually decreases. The child will need a 5th dose as a booster to strengthen their immunity. 

Polio: “4 or more doses of IPV can be administered before age 4 years when a combination vaccine containing IPV is used. However, a dose is still recommended on or after age 4 years and at least 6 months after the previous dose.” The last dose after age 4 acts as a booster to strengthen the immune response, ensuring long-term protection against these diseases.

***MMR: need a 3rd dose if the first dose was given before 12 months of age. In Cambodia, the first dose of the MMR vaccine is given at 9 months due to the prevalence of these diseases. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the first dose at 12 months for these reasons:
1. From newborn to under 12 months of age, a child receives maternal antibodies as a temporary immunity against mumps, measles, and rubella.
2. The antibodies start to wane after 12 months, so a first dose of the MMR is required at this age.
3. If the MMR vaccine is given before 12 months, the maternal antibodies in infants under 12 months can interfere with vaccine efficacy.

Thus, children receiving their first MMR dose at 9 months typically need a third dose for adequate immunity as they grow.

Is a lingering cough after a cold normal?
A persistent cough after a common cold, known as a post-viral cough, can last for three to eight weeks due to postnasal drip and inflammation. Although the cough usually resolves on its own, it is advised to seek medical care if you experience symptoms like coughing up green sputum, blood, or ongoing fever. Home remedies and over-the-counter medications can help, but prescription treatments may be necessary if symptoms persist. Other underlying causes like allergy, asthma, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) could contribute to the cough, so it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider if your or your child’s symptoms do not improve over time.

Tips to Manage Your Allergies:

1. Indoor Protection
   • Dust mites thrive indoors, especially in bedding and furniture. Clean your living space regularly.
   • Use air purifiers if possible.
   • Change bedding weekly.
2. Outdoor Precautions
   • Stay indoors during windy days when dust circulation is high or smoke from rubbish burning. 
   • Wear a mask when venturing outside, especially early morning or evening.
   • Shower after extended outdoor activities to remove allergens.
3. Health Habits
   • Keep windows closed during peak dusty periods.
   • Stay hydrated to help your body naturally fight allergens.
   • Consider using a humidifier to maintain optimal indoor air moisture.

Cool, windy weather can cause symptoms like a dry, itchy, runny, stuffy nose, headaches, and an irritated throat. These conditions and the onset of the “burning season” can increase the likelihood of allergies or cold-like symptoms. Residents on the outskirts of Phnom Penh may notice more garbage smoke since the rainy season ended. To protect yourself, stay indoors and close doors and windows if you notice garbage burning nearby. Ensure you get enough sleep, stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, and wash your hands frequently. If your child feels unwell, monitor them at home and consult a healthcare professional before sending medication to school. All medication requires a doctor’s prescription and must be dropped off by parents at our office. The Medication Authorization Form must be filled out and signed by parents.
