School Calendar Change

You may have heard that the number of public holidays for 2020 in Cambodia has been reduced. We will make just one change to our school’s calendar for this year. 20th May will change so that we are in school that day – no holiday. The last week of school in May will look like this:

  • 25, 26, 27 May will be normal school days.
  • 28 May will be the last day of school for students – half day and no lunch.
  • 29 May will be the last day for teachers.

PSAT Testing, Wednesday, Oct. 16

We will offer PSAT testing to Grade 10 & 11 students on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. We require our Grade 10 students to take the test, and we do not charge them for it. The PSAT is optional for Grade 11 students, and we charge Grade 11 students $16 to cover the cost of the test.

Why should students take the PSAT?

  • To help prepare for the SAT. Students can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions they will see on the SAT.
  • PSAT results can give you a general idea of how well students will do on the SAT and offers feedback about students’ strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. Students can then focus their preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
  • United States Citizens in Grade 11 who perform well on the test may be eligible for National Merit Scholarships to college.

We have already ordered and received our PSAT tests, but we have a couple of extra copies.  If you have a Grade 11 student that has not signed up but would like to take the test, please contact Mrs. Young. jyoung@asianhope.org

MAP Testing

MAP testing for both Elementary and Secondary has been completed for the fall term. Thank you all for the excellent attendance of your students, and congratulations to them for their hard work!

The MAP tests are used as a diagnostic tool for the school, and so they are not part of the students’ grades at all.  Individual results are not sent out at this time, however, Logos will distribute a report for every student along with their first quarter report cards.

Note from School Nurse

As you are all aware, we have an acute upper respiratory illness sweeping through the country like wildfire. I have been reassured by local Medical Doctors that the multiple complaints of  sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, coughing, water eyes, mild headache and mild body are the result of a cold virus.

Children and adults usually recover from a cold within two weeks. You should always keep your healthcare provider informed if the illness gets worse or lasts longer than expected. The best way to combat the common cold is to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. The best way to prevent the infection is to practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently and avoiding touching your nose, eyes and mouth. These are practices we diligently have our students and staff follow. Thank you for supporting our efforts at home with these practices and keeping your child home if they have fever above 38C or are not feeling well.

Parent and Student Seminar – University Preparation

When: Tuesday, September 3 at 3:30 pm

Where: Logos International Multi-Purpose Room

Preparing for university can be a daunting task. There are many unknowns and the answers to some questions seem to just lead to more questions. We want to serve our Logos community by offering some helpful insights, tips, and guidance to both parents and students. Whether you have only a few questions and concerns or are quite clueless about the university preparation and application process, this seminar is a great opportunity to learn along with your student as they get ready for their future.

We will cover:

  • General university preparation information
  • What you need for university admittance in America, UK,  Australia, and Asia
  • Q & A time

LPA Prayer Walk & Community Day

All families are invited to attend the Logos Community Day, August 31st. Come to the school campus for a prayer walk to lift up our children, teachers, and school,  from 1 -2 pm.  Then stay until 4 pm for an afternoon of swimming, games, and fun. Free childcare will be provided for children between the ages of 1-5. Please bring a snack to share.

School Photos!

Logos student photos will be taken next week!  On Monday, August 26, individual photos will be taken – students should dress down appropriately for their photo.  On Tuesday, August 27,  class photos will be taken – students should all wear their regular uniforms (not PE).

An order form was being sent home with your student with options for you to order photos.  Please return the form and payment to the front office by Monday, August 26.

A Note from School Nurse

It’s not just kids back in class – school is now in session for germs, viruses and bacteria that cause illnesses that can make your child (or you) sick. At Logos, we Practice Good Hand Hygiene. Good hand-washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of colds, the flu, and viruses. Washing your hands after using the bathroom, blowing your nose, handling trash, touching animals, and prior to touching food will help eliminate germs. Soap and water can be used for 20 seconds to their hands to wash away those germs. Using alcohol-based hand cleaners is also effective. As a parent, what do you need to watch for? Here are several illnesses commonly found in schools and how to treat them:

  • COLD
    • Symptoms: Sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, cough, mild fatigue, fever.
    • Treatment: Home care products may relieve some of the symptoms but will not get rid of the illness. Antibiotics won’t help either — it just has to run its course. Take over-the-counter pain relievers, drinking plenty of fluids and rest.
  • PHARYNGITIS (SORE THROAT)
    • Symptoms: Sore throat (of course), fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, skin rash, swollen lymph glands in the neck.
    • Treatment: If caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t help. and it will go away on its own within five to seven days. However, antibiotics can help if the sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection.
  • FLU
    • Symptoms: Abrupt onset of fever, headache, muscle pain, and malaise; possible sore throat and cough.
    • Treatment: Replace fluids and electrolytes (salt and minerals), and eat bland foods (crackers, toast, rice or chicken). Avoid dairy products and highly seasoned or fatty foods for a few days.

Thank you for helping us keep our children’s health and campus safe!
